And now for something completely different…

Another advantage to having some time to root around in one’s studio is the discovery of the stock pile of supplies that were purchased for the “what if” moments of creativity.  Like “what if” I buy five packages of scratch board art at Big Lots for $1.50 each and get the urge for old school scratching?  It might happen.  What if I’m inspired by pop art and want to do something completely unconventional on scratch board.  What if I google some new sub-genre of music mixing called “Trap” and decide that vintage animal traps would be good subject matter.  It could happen.  It did happen this morning.  Fresh off the inspiration of First Friday artwalk with a new venue The Standard.  The scratch board had stock images already on the board so I black gessoed over one and left the trio of baby sealions on the other board.  And you might ask how does an artist decide to put an image of fingernail polish precariously tilted toward the spring mechanism of a stylized trap?  It’s simple…it was sitting on the table in front of me when I was scratching my board.  Yup…seemed to have the right pop influence, the right weight to actually trip a spring and the right metaphor for greedy little paws.  And sometimes I get mad at my fingernail polish and feel it should enter the category of bottled water and glitter eyeshadow and be fed to an animal trap.  Feel trapped?…this subject could have endless applications (and not just nail polish).
